This year, I really have to breathe a sigh of
relief that the wet weather stopped for a few brief hours to give us all a dry
ride. Helen and Jon came good again to retain their positions at the top of each
event. Nadine and Dave set a new Club Record for mixed 2-ups and kept the name
of Leamington in the limelight. John Dixson shows he is still the most
consistent Vet, even now he’s past 70. Local riders filled most of the prize
list, thanks for supporting the event regularly. It’s a shame we had so many
DNSs, I hope the injured and sick competitors recover quickly, and thanks to
everyone who sent in apologies; it does mean that 1 in 4 riders who rode, went
away with a prize.
This event marked the 25th year of our longest
2-up partnership; Gordon Chinn and Steph Tallis have been riding since Gordon
was a youngster in his 50s, well done to you both.
Thanks also to my excellent club-mates for
chipping in and helping on the day. Mick Ford oversaw the signing on and
distributed the numbers, and looked after the fort while Christine and I enjoyed
our racing. Peter and Simone, the timekeepers, Eileen recording the times; Roger
Gardner and Lloyd Storey pushing off; Liz Gardner on the first corner (Roger &
Liz celebrated their Ruby Wedding on the day, congratulations both!); Gig Cooke,
Andy Gibson and Alistair Miatt controlled the top end of the Straight Mile;
Peter Ellis, Steve Castle and Will Wilson saw you safely round the Fosse Way
island; Chris Nichols and John Allsop did the same at Thurlaston; and Nigel Wood
phoned the results through. A special mention for Jean Bayliss who has timed
many top class events and World Record attempts, she wrote the times on the
board for you all. We mustn’t forget Jan Ford, Tea Lady Supremo, who fed and
watered the thirsty riders, you are a star, Jan! Mrs Edna Watt of Long
Itchington allowed us to use the Community Hall, and finally my wife, Christine,
who prepared the Result Sheets with such skill (typos excepted!). Thanks to you
all, let’s do it again next September.
