Date: 01.05.2002 Unbeatable Herring It was a case of "3-out-of-3" for John Herring in his club's 10 mile event on the Fosse Way course, south of Offchurch. His winning time of 23m-43s was nearly 2 seconds per mile faster than 2nd placed fellow Vet' Tony Smith, who just "crept inside" the 25 mph barrier with the slenderest of margins (23 59). Dave Bennett was a further 4 seconds in arrears and fast improving Arthur Beeton was only 6 seconds back (the Presidents Health Club should be proud of him); Mike Ford was the last of the fastmen, the only other rider with a "24" to his name. A 61 second margin marked the arrival of young Tim Cadd who was hotly pursued by another "roadie" Martin Hackley. The weather conditions were once again a major player in the times recorded with a particularly tough outward section towards Harwoods House and the wind did not help much on the return journey much to the chagrin of all the competitors. The ladies competition is hotting-up with Christine Walker (30 15) on this occasion getting much closer to Pam Styles who's winning time was precisely on the half-hour mark. Both ladies finished in front of veteran long distance athlete Cavin Woodward (30 38), who was competing, on two wheels, for only the 2nd time this season. |
