Date: 26.06.2002 John Herring (56m 23s) continued his almost relentless progress by heading the results of the Leamington C&AC evening time trial series. On this windy occasion he secured his first championship (Dave Cooke) trophy over the hilly circuit, which climbs both Chesterton and Bishops Itchington hills twice; the wind direction on Wednesday evening meant that the majority of riders "flew" up the Chesterton climb. Arthur Beeton's first lap effort meant that he was 2nd placed on the road, at that point, but he lost precious minutes on the 2nd lap to allow Tony Smith to overhaul him, their finish times being 59 47 and 58 51 respectively. Senior roadman Mick Stallard (1h 1m 23s) was 4th and just 15s too good for veteran Chris Blomfield, whilst cyclist turned runner, Phil Galpin (1 2 12) finished over half a minute ahead of evergreen hill climber Pete Taylor (1 2 49). Pam Styles (1 10 46) had an "easy" time in collecting the ladies trophy, being nearly 9 minutes ahead of newcomer Nadine Garoud (1 19 02). The next championship, the 10, will be fought-out on the Princethorpe circuit, a course that has not been used by the Leamington club, very frequently, in recent years but which used to be the favoured course 5 or so years ago. |
