Date: 12.06.2002 While the Cat's away, so the saying goes, the mice will play. Arthur Beeton made the most of the absent cats, off holidaying in northern Italy (messrs Herring, Smith and Preston), to stamp his mark on the first of possibly many races. His time of 39:12 for the sporting 15 mile event was too good for the experienced riders such as Phil Burridge and Ian Maltby, Arthur had 15 seconds in hand over Phil and 50 over Ian, who is in his first year with the Club. The Irishman also showed everyone else in the race that when you win, do it convincingly, he actually scored a Personal Best time (1:48 improvement) and so stakes a claim in the Vaughan Trophy for the best and most consistent improver over the season. Other riders who achieved an improvement on the night were John Frydman (1:40 imp)and second placed Phil Burridge (0:06 imp), a fair reflection of the tough conditions, when the wind seemed to be blowing in your face all the way round the circuit! Mike Stallard produced the 4th fastest time (40:52), ahead of Chris Blomfield, Alan Edwards, Richard Gostick and newcomer Chris Lovell, with Steve walker and last year's Vaughan champion, Matthew Wallington filling in the rest of the top 10 places. Cavin Woodward once again showed Roger Gardner a clean pair of wheels to win their private "battle of the Club Presidents". Pam Styles returned from a Scottish holiday to win the ladies championship (47:39), beating Chris Walker by 2 and a half minutes, her brand new racing bike getting its first airing in competition. |
