Date: 17.07.2002 The holiday season has affected this event over the years, and this year was no exception, regular riders were unavailable to partner their team members, and the time-keepers both chose the same week to take off to foreign parts. This meant that reserve official Steve Walker had to man the watches, his wife Christine was not the only rider to find a different partner for the event. The current unstoppable John Herring would have ridden with Tony Smith, but Tony was absent himself, they have made up the winning team in previous years. Paul Preston teamed up with Chris Blomfield for the third year, but previously they have finished third on both occasions, tonight they stormed round in the cool conditions with a winning time of 1:03:29. Second place went to another experienced pair, Alan Edwards partnering Phil Galpin as in 2001, they passed the timekeeper in 1:04:45, beating the bronze medal team of John Herring and Adrie Breugelmans by exactly half a minute. Newcomer Chris Lovell joined Club President Roger Gardner to record the fourth fastest time, 1:08:13, ahead of the younger team of student Joss Clempson and last year's Vaughan Champion, Matthew Wallington, 1:09:27. Two teams of mixed sex filled the last two finishing places, Cavin Woodward and Chris Walker made an evenly matched team, pleased to record 1:13:16 ahead of rookie team members Tina Mullins and Ian Strath, riding their first 25 mile event, who completed the distance in 1:17:55. Unlucky partner-less Peter Taylor had to settle for a lonely effort, he finished the event under his own steam in 1:07:50. Nadine Garioud and Seth Mayhew opted for the 10 mile distance on this evening, they recorded 29:55 and 30:21 respectively. |
