Date: 03.07.02 Beeton can't be beaten Arthur Beeton (23m 19s) secured his 2nd Championship of the 2002 season with an impressive ride in very windy conditions, which have become a regular feature of the Wednesday evening Time Trials. It was just one month ago that he won the 15 mile Championship, whilst most of the "experts" were on holiday but on this occasion he removed all doubt regarding his ability by beating the veteran trio of Tony Smith (23m 22s), Mike Ford (23m 39s) and Len Orrick (24m 32s). Beeton's performance was just reward for all the hard-work put-in during the winter months. A sizeable field of 24 riders presented themselves to the timekeeper, including 3 private trials, which demonstrates the reputation of the course as being "rapid" compared to the Fosse Way, which is more regularly used by the LC&AC. Young Beeton (30 something) is also making a name for himself in the Season-long Vaughan Trophy competition, which favours the "best improvers". His winning performance in the 10 mile event gained him a further 8 points to add to the maximum's he achieved in the 15 and 22 mile championships, which means he now leads 2nd placed Pam Styles by 12 points - almost Schumacher proportions! Interest now turns to the 30 mile championship, next Wednesday, where veteran Mike Ford's stamina should press Beeton all the way, after an anticipated fast start by the younger and less experienced rider. |
