Date: 07.08.2002 Triathlete takes all On an evening where half the course was awash, after a deluge of the wet stuff, and the other half was still dry, triathlete Steve Hundall (40m 09s) made good use of the otherwise near-perfect conditions to score a resounding win in the 1st stage of the Cyclist vs. Athletes two-stage event. It was Steve's best time and best position ever recorded, in the cycling event; in 1999 he was 4th (42 56) and in 2001 he finished 5th (42 18). This outstanding improvement makes him hot favourite to win the Trophy again, which he won in 1999 but relinquished to Phil Galpin in 2000. Galpin finished well down the field in 9th place with a time of 43m 35s and must surely have his work cut-out to pull-back such a deficit over the 4 mile road run, next Tuesday evening, which starts and finishes close to the Edmondscote Track. Alan Edwards (42 03), too, made a dramatic improvement to finish in 3rd place, probably being spurred-on by the competition with son Noel (45 31) who finished just one place ahead of Ross Woodward (46 16) deposing of father Cavin (46 41) in the process. Woodward senior's time marked a significant milestone in his short cycling career in that he beat, for the 1st time, Club Chairman Roger Gardner (47 34). Fastest lady, again, was Pam Styles (47 49), a 3 minute improvement over her previous best of 2000 and whilst we are on the subject of improvements, how about Christine Walker who improved from a 2001 time of 57 52 to finish this time in 50 23! |
