Warwick Town Centre races

Make a date in your diary for 23rd June, Warwickshire County Council are closing roads in the centre of the town to put on a series of races, based on the Market Place. A 1 kilometre circuit is planned, which will probably include Jury Street and Church Street, so book your place outside the Zetland Arms now, what better than watching the racing with a pint in your hand?
23rd of June, that'll be a Wednesday evening, naturally!

Nigel Wood's Coaching Evening

Nigel Wood presented a useful introduction into some of the aspects of bike coaching at the Old Leamingtonians' Rugby club on a recent Monday evening. Nigel is a level 2 British Triathlon Association coach. Most of the audience had a similar requirement of reducing their TT times without spending any extra time cycling (a typical outlook apparently!) and Nigel explained that this was possible by looking closely at our training, 'Training smarter' to coin a phrase.

The main areas covered were to do with goal-setting, basic training programme, use of a heart rate monitor, and riding style. It is important to select main goals, with other goals that contribute and don't conflict with the main goals. And trying to select goals that are not massively diverse!

The simplified basic structure for a year's training, aiming to peak in June, starting with steady miles at the beginning of the year, known as "fat burn", followed by aerobic level, and anaerobic levels finishing with lactate about May/June. He linked this closely with the use of a heart rate monitor and the basic steps to use one in training. Identification of heart rate range, max. and min. limits and the levels between these that relate to the training levels.

He then used the Cycling Time Trials championship video to critique several of the riders' styles, drawing attention particularly to cadence being around 90, to enable the body to sit comfortably and not rock or move the shoulder when in the racing position, which can come from pushing too high a gear at a low cadence. It was useful to pick out some of the 'stars' and he made the point that even though they were at the top of their sport, imagine how much better they could be if they took a closer look at what they were doing.

It was an informative overview of what is undoubtedly a very subjective and complex area of our sport and provided some food for thought. Nigel's efforts in making this presentation were appreciated by the audience, and we'll see if some of the ideas make a difference this season. Would Nigel be prepared to recommend any publications or offer any follow up sessions later this year?

Club clothing

Steve Walker now has sufficient stock of Race clothing to satisfy the recent influx of new members' needs, and has a few items extra to the usual lycra and acrylic jerseys. Endura have been helpful in manufacturing a few pairs of lycra overshoes (racing) and some helmet covers with the LC&AC logo. Since ordering the original lot of clothing about five years ago, we have held the prices of the basic lines down, but after a couple of increases were absorbed, we now need to revise the price paid by members. Endura's catalogue price will be the one you pay, this is net of VAT, we get a discount of 10% for the size of the order, so you will still get the clothes 5.75% cheaper than the Club buys them for, and it saves having to recalculate all the different items.
